Arc
Arc is an innovative macOS browser featuring a sidebar tab design and workspace concept, redefining the web browsing experience. With its vertical tab bar and intelligent space management, it enables you to organize and switch between webpages more efficiently.
Arc – The Revolutionary Browser by The Browser Company
Platforms: macOS (native Apple Silicon support) & iOS
Core Philosophy: Redefining how we work and create on the internet, transforming the browser from a passive "viewing tool" into an active "workspace."
Arc is not another simple Chromium-based clone. It is a browser built from the ground up by The Browser Company, deeply integrated with macOS system features such as sandboxing, native keyboard shortcuts, and smooth animations. Its goal is to fundamentally change how users interact with the web.
Key Features
1. Sidebar & Workspace Management
- Vertical Tab Bar: Moves the traditional horizontal tab bar to a vertical layout on the left, better suited for wide-screen displays, allowing more tab titles to be visible at once.
- Spaces: Similar to "workspaces," you can create separate "Spaces" for Work, Personal, Project A, Project B, etc. Each space maintains its own bookmarks, tabs, and browser settings, enabling seamless switching and perfect context segmentation.
- Grouping & Pinning Tabs: In the sidebar, you can drag related tabs into groups and name them. Frequently used sites (e.g., Gmail, Notion) can be pinned to the top of the sidebar, functioning as persistent applications.
- Today/Bookmarks/Notes Section: The top area of the sidebar provides quick access to pinned apps and bookmarks, and includes a simple notes feature.
2. Productivity-Enhancing Innovations
- Boost Feature: Built-in web customization tool. Allows users to write CSS and JavaScript directly for any website to modify its appearance (e.g., dark mode, hiding elements) or add minor features, and easily share these "customization templates" with others.
- Enhanced Picture-in-Picture (PiP): Turns videos, web pages, or even entire app windows into floating, always-on-top windows for easy reference during multitasking.
- “Mini Arc”: A multi-functional command bar invoked with
Command + T. It can search the web, search open tabs, run commands (e.g., clear downloads), and quickly access features. - Easy Start: Quickly launch a lightweight, distraction-free temporary browser window for temporary logins or browsing, then discard it when done.
- Integrated Notes & Whiteboard: Includes simple note-taking and whiteboard tools ("Notes" and "Canvas") for jotting down ideas or sketching, which can be saved alongside links.
3. Elegant Design & Interaction
- Distraction-Free Full-Screen Browsing: When focusing on a single tab, the sidebar automatically hides for an immersive full-screen experience. Hover the mouse over the left edge to bring it back.
- Beautiful Native Experience: Fully adheres to macOS design language, featuring smooth animations, frosted glass effects, and refined icons, blending seamlessly with the operating system.
- Keyboard-Driven: Deeply supports keyboard navigation; most core actions can be performed via shortcuts, greatly enhancing efficiency.
Advantages
- True "Workflow" Browser: Arc’s “Spaces” and “Pinned Tabs” design truly understands modern users’ multitasking and multi-project needs, turning chaotic tab management into an organized, intuitive experience.
- Exceptional Aesthetics & Polish: Its UI/UX design stands out among browsers, offering a visually pleasing and fluid experience that goes far beyond the typical “tool-like” feel of most browsers.
- Empowers Creation Over Passive Consumption: The Boost feature is revolutionary—it blurs the line between browser user and developer, enabling ordinary users to easily customize websites they use daily.
- Deeply Optimized for macOS: Leverages Apple Silicon performance and macOS system features for fast, low-power operation, with excellent integration (e.g., Handoff, Universal Control).
- Powerful Shortcuts & Command Bar: Greatly reduces reliance on the mouse, making it especially beloved by developers and writers who value keyboard efficiency.
Conclusion
Arc is a future-oriented browser with a bold point of view. It may not suit everyone—especially those who prefer minimalism or expect a browser to be “just a browser.” However, for macOS users who value efficiency, aesthetics, and want to turn their browser into a central hub for digital life, Arc offers an exciting and highly productive choice. It’s not merely a tool for browsing the web—it’s a customizable, segmented, creativity-enhancing workspace.
Note: Arc uses a unique invitation-based or waitlist system to release new versions. First-time users may need to queue or use an invitation code. Its design philosophy and features are rapidly evolving.
