NearDrop

Open SourceFree

NearDrop is an open-source tool that enables AirDrop-like file transfer between Android devices and Macs, without requiring the internet or Bluetooth—files can be shared quickly and securely using only direct Wi-Fi connection.

NearDrop

Overview

NearDrop is an unofficial Google Nearby Share/Quick Share application designed for macOS. It enables wireless file transfer between your Mac and Android devices, perfectly filling the gap left by the lack of native Nearby Share support in the macOS ecosystem. The app runs as a minimalist menu bar icon, with received files automatically saved to the system's Downloads folder by default.

Features

Core Functionality

  1. Seamless File Transfer: Quickly send files, images, links, and more from your Android device to your Mac using the Google Nearby Share protocol.
  2. Menu Bar Resident: Operates as a lightweight menu bar application, occupying no Dock space and always ready to receive files.
  3. Automatic Saving: Received files are automatically saved to macOS’s “Downloads” folder for easy access and management.
  4. Protocol Compatibility: Implements the core protocol of Google Nearby Share (now also known as Quick Share), compatible with most modern Android devices.

Technical & Compatibility

  • Network Requirements: Currently supports file transfer primarily over the same Wi-Fi local network. Both sending and receiving devices must be connected to the same wireless network.
  • User-Friendly: Requires almost no configuration after installation—simply run and use.

Advantages

  1. Fills Ecosystem Gap: Provides macOS users with an official-protocol solution for fast, convenient file sharing with Android devices, eliminating the need for third-party cloud services or cables.
  2. Fully Free and Open Source: Licensed under Unlicense, completely free and open-source. You can inspect all source code for transparency and security.
  3. Lightweight and Non-Intrusive: Runs silently as a menu bar app, only notifying you when files are received, without disrupting your workflow.
  4. Simplified Workflow: For cross-platform (Android + macOS) users, it greatly streamlines daily file exchanges, offering an experience similar to using AirDrop between macOS devices.

Known Limitations

  • Wi-Fi Local Network Only: Current version supports transfer only within the same Wi-Fi network. It does not support additional transmission modes available in the official Google app, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, 5G peer-to-peer, or internet relay.
  • macOS Network Constraints: Due to macOS’s lack of support for standard Wi-Fi Direct (Apple uses its proprietary AWDL technology for AirDrop), direct device-to-device connections similar to AirDrop are not possible.
  • Visibility Settings: The app is visible to all devices on the same network while running. It currently lacks advanced visibility controls like “visible to contacts only” or “hidden,” as those features require interaction with Google’s servers.
  • Public Network Restrictions: On certain public networks (e.g., cafes, hotels), local network communication between devices may be blocked by router policies, potentially disabling the app’s functionality.

Installation

Standard Installation

  1. After extracting, drag NearDrop.app to the “Applications” folder.
  2. On first launch: Since it’s an unsigned developer app, right-click the app in Finder and select “Open,” then confirm in the security prompt.
  3. Alternatively, you can allow the app in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

Homebrew Installation (Recommended for Developers/Advanced Users)

brew install --no-quarantine grishka/grishka/neardrop

The --no-quarantine flag bypasses certain initial security checks.

Set to Launch at Login

To have NearDrop start automatically on login, add it to macOS’s “Login Items” via System Settings.

Troubleshooting

  • “App cannot be opened because it cannot be checked for malicious software”:

    • Solution: Right-click the app in Finder and select “Open.” Alternatively, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, and allow the app to run.
  • Android device cannot detect Mac:

    1. Check Network: Ensure both Mac and Android device are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
    2. Check Router Settings: At home, confirm that your router does not have “Client Isolation” (AP Isolation) or similar features that block device-to-device communication within the local network.
    3. Check Firewall: Temporarily disable macOS firewall or ensure NearDrop is allowed in firewall rules.
    4. Public Network Restrictions: This feature is likely to fail on public Wi-Fi networks such as those in hotels or airports.

Summary: NearDrop is an extremely useful tool that establishes a stable and reliable bridge for wireless file sharing between macOS and Android devices with minimal effort. While it has some limitations tied to underlying system constraints, for everyday file sharing within the same local network, it offers a near-perfect solution.
