LinkLiar: macOS Link Layer MAC Address Spoofing Tool

Application Overview

LinkLiar is an intuitive menu bar application for macOS, developed in Swift. Its primary function is to help users easily spoof the MAC (Media Access Control) address of Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces, effectively preventing macOS devices from exposing their real hardware MAC addresses. As a free and open-source project, it provides a user-friendly graphical interface that makes network privacy protection simple and accessible.

Core Features

  • MAC Address Spoofing: Supports MAC address modification for Wi-Fi (Airport) and Ethernet interfaces.
  • Menu Bar Quick Access: Enables fast access and management of all network interfaces via the macOS menu bar.
  • Random Address Generation: Generates random or custom MAC addresses with one click, enhancing network anonymity.
  • Configuration Save & Restore: Allows users to save specific MAC address configurations for quick switching.
  • Open Source Transparency: Fully open-source code available for review and contribution, ensuring security and reliability.
  • Support for Multiple macOS Versions: Compatible with macOS Sierra (10.12) and later (older versions available on the release page).

Unique Advantages

  1. Enhanced Privacy Protection: Regular or on-demand MAC address changes prevent network tracking and user profiling based on MAC addresses.
  2. Intuitive GUI Interface: Compared to command-line tools, the graphical interface significantly lowers the barrier to use, suitable for all types of users.
  3. Automated Management: Can be configured to automatically apply MAC address changes on system startup or network connection.
  4. Free and Open Source: Licensed under MIT, completely free with public code—no hidden costs or privacy risks.
  5. Optimized for macOS Integration: Designed with macOS system characteristics in mind, ensuring compatibility with system network settings.

How to Use

  1. Installation:
    • Install quickly via Homebrew: brew install --cask linkliar
    • For manual installation, refer to detailed steps in the project documentation.
  2. Basic Operation: After installation, the LinkLiar icon appears in the menu bar. Click the icon to select a network interface and set a new MAC address (random or manually entered).
  3. Advanced Configuration: Supports automated tasks via configuration files or built-in options, such as periodic address changes.

Notes and Limitations

  • Wi-Fi Must Be Enabled: If Wi-Fi is turned off, its MAC address cannot be modified; enable Wi-Fi first.
  • Connection Interruption Risk: Changing MAC address while the interface is connected may cause a brief disconnection.
  • System Display Discrepancy: After successful change, System Preferences may still show the original hardware MAC address, but actual network traffic uses the new address.
  • Hardware and System Limitations:
    • 2018 MacBook models may fail to change MAC addresses due to a macOS system bug.
    • On macOS 12.3 (Monterey) and later, MAC addresses of connected interfaces cannot be modified directly; LinkLiar automatically handles disconnection to complete the change.
  • Requires Administrator Privileges: First-time use requires entering the root password to obtain necessary permissions.

  • Open Source Community: Welcome to submit issues, feature requests, or contribute code on GitHub.

With LinkLiar, macOS users can easily take control of their network identity privacy, especially in sensitive environments like public Wi-Fi, effectively reducing the risk of being tracked or identified.
