HapticKey
Add haptic feedback to your MacBook keyboard and trackpad
HapticKey is a lightweight, open-source, and completely free application designed specifically for MacBooks equipped with the Taptic Engine. Its core function is to deliver immediate, subtle haptic feedback with every keystroke or trackpad tap—similar to the 3D Touch or haptic feedback experience on iPhone—enhancing your input experience and providing a more tangible, satisfying sense of confirmation.
Key Features
Haptify Your Input
- Keystroke Feedback: Every time you press a key (with customizable exclusions), the MacBook’s Taptic Engine delivers a brief, precise vibration. Ideal for typists who prefer tactile feedback or for quiet environments where tactile confirmation is preferred.
- Trackpad Tap Feedback: In addition to the keyboard, HapticKey also provides haptic feedback for physical trackpad taps.
Highly Customizable
- Customizable Feedback Devices: Enable haptic feedback for the keyboard, trackpad, or both independently.
- Vibration Intensity: Choose from
Light,Medium, orStrongvibration levels to suit your preference and environment. - Sound Effect (optional): Optionally play a subtle “click” sound with each trigger for combined auditory and tactile confirmation.
- Exclude Specific Keys: Exclude keys like Space or Command to avoid unnecessary vibrations during specific operations.
Lightweight and Non-Intrusive
- Runs as a menu bar application, consuming minimal system resources.
- All settings are accessed via a clean menu bar dropdown—no complex configuration windows needed. Ready to use instantly.
- Supports auto-launch at startup—set once and enjoy haptic feedback permanently.

Benefits & Value
- Enhanced Input Experience & Accuracy: Haptic feedback provides a physical keypress-like confirmation, especially beneficial for users of MacBook’s Butterfly or Magic keyboards. Reduces mis-tap anxiety and improves typing rhythm and satisfaction.
- More Immersive Interaction: Connects silent keyboard and trackpad actions with tactile feedback, enriching human-computer interaction. Perfect for users who value refined details.
- Focus & Accessibility: During focused tasks like writing or coding, haptic feedback allows your brain to confirm actions without relying on sight or sound, minimizing distractions. It also serves as a useful accessibility feature for some users.
- Completely Free & Secure: Unlike similar paid apps in the App Store, HapticKey is 100% free and open source. Download directly from GitHub—no subscriptions or privacy concerns.
- Minimal Resource Usage: As a single-purpose utility, it runs efficiently with virtually no impact on your Mac’s performance or battery life.
System Requirements
- Hardware: MacBook with Taptic Engine (typically 2018 and later MacBook Pro models, and some MacBook Air models).
- OS: macOS Monterey (12.0) or later.
