Tropy was initially developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) and is now jointly maintained by:

- Center for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), Luxembourg
- Digital Scholar (a non-profit organization that also manages Zotero, Omeka, and Sourcery)
The project has received generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and benefits from active contributions by a global user community, including feature suggestions, bug reports, workshop support, and interface translations.
